Silhouette My Saturday this week features a set of six inspirational soccer quotes along with their files available in a free download. A lot of these quotes would work for other sports as well. And I tried to make them work for both boys and girls. I hope you enjoy this Silhouette Soccer project!
My daughter loves soccer. So much so that sometimes I feel like it consumes our lives. She plays on a competitive team. Unfortunately the team she plays on is a 45 minute drive each way. Which I make four nights a week. But she’s working hard, and seeing her focus and drive, as well as her steady improvement makes it worthwhile. So as part of her ongoing effort I decided to decorate her room with some soccer inspiration.
My daughter has one empty wall where I decided the inspirational quotes are going to go. I had a lot of requirements for this project. Well, when I started I really didn’t have that many, but I made the mistake of asking my daughter for input.
1. Cheap. She’s twelve. This is not a forever project.
2. Not too girly. She hates pink. Enough said.
3. Sparkle. Apparently twelve-year olds can request both not girly and want sparkle and this is not a conflict of interest.
4. She wanted at least one quote from her two favorite players, Alex Morgan and Abby Womback.
5. I didn’t want to have to buy new vinyl. This limited me because I have about three colors.
6. I wanted this to be typographically interesting. Not just the subway art style where you squeeze or stretch the letters to fit the space.
While checking out a Tuesday Morning store that just opened up near me, I stumbled upon a craft aisle. This is exciting because even using a 40% off coupon at Michaels can get pricey for craft supplies. They had a pack of 24 sheets of lime green glitter paper in 12″ x 12″ for only $2.99. That’s a great deal! And it provided my “sparkle” requirement.
I thought about cutting MDF panels in 12″ x 12″ and modgepodging (yes I made that a verb) the sparkle paper to the panels. But then when I got home I found that I still had six of the 12″ x 12″ canvases left over from my laundry room art project. Which made my life soooo much easier. And I didn’t have to drag out the table saw. I was starting to feel like this project was just meant to be.
I went on Pinterest and searched for soccer quotes. While I found lots of quotes, I wanted to design my take on the look and feel, so I didn’t copy people’s designs. After all I am a graphic designer, I should be able to come up with my own. After I created the files in Illustrator, I saved them as SVG files and opened them in the Silhouette software. While I was cutting out the white and silver vinyl, I tried to use modgepodge to attach the sparkle paper to the canvas. This was a total fail. The paper had some sort of plastic coating and would not adhere. In fact I had to use the Oracal 651 permanent adhesive to get it to stick to the paper sparkly side of the paper. I don’t know what they made this paper out of, but teflon might be the main ingredient. I ended up using double-sided permanent scrapbooking tape to attach the green sparkle paper. I then sent two pages of the sparkle paper through my silhouette to cut out 5/8″ strips of paper to cover the sides of the canvas. I taped those on using the double-sided tape as well.
As far as two color vinyl assembly goes, this one was not hard at all. It did not require precise placement. I just sort of eyeballed it. Before you know it (OK eight hours later) I had six new canvases hung up on her wall.
As part of this series, Silhouette My Saturday, I will be providing free downloads of the Silhouette Files I create. This is my way of saying thank you for visiting my site. You are free to reuse these files, just don’t distribute them as your own, or sell them. A link back or a comment is always appreciated.
A lot of these quotes would work for any sport, not just soccer. If you just skipped the glitter paper they would work in a boy’s room as well.
Here they are. I’d love to hear what you think of them. And if you make a project of your own, please link to me and let me see it! I can’t wait!
